Meta files 8 trademark applications centered around its metaverse logo
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has filed eight trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to use its intellectual property in the metaverse and the broader blockchain space.
According to Mike Kondoudis, a USPTO-licensed attorney and expert on trademarks, the social media giant applied for trademarks spanning across various crypto and metaverse use cases, including crypto tokens, virtual currency trading platforms, and blockchain-based software.
The filings indicate that Meta, formerly Facebook, is looking to use blockchain technology for its highly publicized metaverse platform. As a reminder, last October Facebook rebranded to Meta to showcase its commitment to the virtual reality space, which marked the company’s first significant pivot since its founding in 2004.
The social network’s move sparked a huge wave of interest for metaverse-related cryptocurrency projects at the time and catapulted tokens like AXS, SAND, and MANA to their respective all-time highs.
Last week, Zuckerberg revealed that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are soon coming to the popular photo-sharing platform Instagram and further deepened its tech empire’s ties to the blockchain space.
In related news, international payment card services company American Express and the New York Stock Exchange have recently also filed trademark applications related to Web3 and crypto in general.
